Chapter Nineteen

Noah had been sitting at the bar for about ten minutes when Amy came over.

‘I know I’m being rude,’ he said before she could say anything. ‘Did the others send you to check on me?’

They’d probably figured he was less likely to snap at Amy. They were right.

She hopped onto the empty bar stool beside him. ‘Not rude. Just Noah.’

He met her eyes with a sideways glance. ‘Which is another definition for rude.’

She grinned. ‘You like your space. I get it.’

‘Do you?’ he asked with interest.

‘Well, no, actually.’ She laughed lightly, and he reluctantly gave in to a wry smile.

‘I’m not an “I need space” person,’ she agreed, ‘but that doesn’t mean I don’t understand it. Katie is a bit like you.’

‘Rude and distant? She seemed friendly and sociable to me.’

She swatted the side of his arm with her hand. ‘Stop it. Katie is really creative. She finds it draining to be around people for long periods and needs time to recharge. After my little brother was born, I always made sure she had her space, especially when she had exams on.’

‘That shouldn’t have been your job,’ Noah said. He was beginning to wonder if Amy had been forced to grow up early when her younger brother had come along like he’d been forced to grow up during his mother’s illness.

‘It wasn’t. But I tend to notice other people’s feelings. My mother says it will be an advantage when I have a class of my own. She thinks it will help me with the special needs kids.’

He agreed with Amy’s mother. ‘I know this is going to come out wrong, but why beauty journalism for so long?’

Amy laughed again. ‘You’re really caught up on that, aren’t you? I guess I can share my deepest, darkest secrets about my journalism career if you promise not to tell anyone? Pinkie swear.’

He was smiling again.

She wiggled her pinkie in the air at him and he hooked her finger with his briefly. Even that was enough to zap his synapses.

She returned her hands to her lap. ‘So, as you can imagine, as a young journalism student, I wanted to change the world.’

‘I can imagine that.’ He was still smiling, and it felt good.

‘Final year of university, I managed to score an internship with a major Sydney newspaper. I couldn’t believe my luck when I got assigned to help a court journalist because I’d get access to all the hard-hitting news stories.’ Noah only realised that he’d grimaced when Amy nodded and said, ‘Yeah, I know, right? After four weeks, I was an emotional wreck. It was all so depressing, and because journalists have to report facts, I couldn’t exactly add my opinion on how domestic abuse laws are lacking or how angry it made me. I felt so disillusioned that I approached my editor with the intention of quitting. Instead, they assigned me to the lifestyle section, where I discovered I have a knack for writing about beauty. After graduation, it made sense to continue along that path.
